Pencil To Gouache

We strongly believe in the value of drawing with a pencil rather than a mouse. Besides the control it gives over the quality of the line, putting pencil to paper expresses a uniquely personal hand, and the majority of our patterns begin as hand-drawn sketches. Our designers are constantly creating work in our NYC design studio and recently, Chase decided to dip a pencil eraser into gouache paint to create a simple repeat with an improvisational touch.

Brand New Art At HQ!

We have some new art in the office by artist Klaus Burgel!

"Klaus is a friend of the Pollack studio. He is a jeweler, a teacher and a fine artist. He is also a master at interpreting his dynamic drawings into jewelry. We at Pollack love the character and exuberance of his line drawings (below). As a group, they tell a story of the lines morphing and bouncing around the space in each page" - Rachel, Design Director.

"This piece is by Andrew Kuo, a NYC-based artist and fellow RISD grad. It is titled Slow, Noisy, Heartbreaking Mess, and dates from 2005. It is an acrylic painting on hand-cut paper, a good illustration of my interest in overlapping pattern (though it is not at all textile-like in its patterning). The other thing that particularly interests me about this work is how the paper sits a little bit off the back board on which it is mounted, and the light falling on the piece creates another pattern of shadows visible through the open areas." - Mark

This pencil drawing on paper by D-L Alvarez from 2002 is titled Sounder.  It is a pixilated and fractured image of birds on branches. Obviously grid based, it relates to woven fabric in much the same way that Dr. Atkins Code of Independence does.

"This painting, Slightly from 2006, is by the English artist Jane Harris.

It is a special metallic oil paint on canvas, painted in short textured brushstrokes in both horizontal and vertical directions.  These textures reflect the light differently, and light and dark values reverse when the direction of the light on the painting changes. In this regard, it is very similar to our fabric Ring-o, which replaces the oil paint with short embroidery stitches rendered in both directions. " -Mark
