"This is a woodblock print (ink on paper) by the NYC-based artist, Aric Obrosey. It is called Porterhouse Paisley (2003). It is a unique print in that there is only the one, rather than there being multiples in an edition. And rather than the image being carved into one giant piece of wood, each texture/ pattern was its own woodblock approximately 1" square, and the areas of texture/ pattern were filled in by repeatedly printing with the same block that was carved with its specific pattern in repeat. This screenprint on paper is by Herbert Bayer (1900-1985)--painter, sculptor, graphic designer, photographer and art director. Born in Austria, Bayer came to the US in 1938 after studying and teaching at the Bauhaus. This print from 1970, one of a series of eight, is entitled Birthday Picture II.

"I know very little about the painting," Mark Pollack said of this oil on masonite, signed "MR" and dated 1960. "I bought it sometime in the late 90s in Brussels when I was there attending a trade show. I was wandering around the city on the free afternoon I had before the show opened, and came across a little ‘second-hand’ store that had a lot of cool things in the window, including this painting. Unfortunately the store was closed at the time, but I walked by one evening after work and by chance found the owner there. The owner knew nothing more about the painting, but I loved it regardless and left with it under my arm wrapped in nothing more than brown paper. Thankfully it was bought pre-9/11 and the flight attendants on the trip home were actually helpful in finding a safe place for it during the flight."

This sculpture in our conference room is by Arlene Shechet from 2007, and is made of ceramic, bronze, steel and wood. "I like the incongruous mix of materials, some showing the artist’s hand and others not," said Mark Pollack of the sculpture. Arlene is a NY-based artist and, like Mark, a RISD grad. She currently shows at Jack Shainman Gallery.

This drawing, which sits outside the conference room, is by Toc Fetch, perhaps best known for his "comic books". It is actually a drawing done for one of his books. There was a bubble of text superimposed over the trees, and when someone convinced him to sell the drawing as "art" he eliminated the text by filling in the bubble with leaves. Though it is well disguised, if you look closely you can find the original outline. The woman in the drawing is his wife, Tricia Cline, also an artist. "I’ve met her," Mark Pollack said of Cline, "and the resemblance is striking, even with dry hair."
