Last Saturday I went to a great quilt show at the Park Avenue Armory. The installation had hundreds of red and white handmade quilts that came from the collection of one person. It was very interesting to learn the history behind the quilts, but I also could not help wondering how many years of meticulous hand work were present in this exhibition. My rough calculation was half a century! The quilts were all 100% cotton, and because of their dense stitching and repeated washings, many had a lot of pucker. This all-over effect reminded me of a really great matelasse fabric we have been working on, that hopefully will be incorporated into the next collection. Even though matelasse constructions are woven (not sewn like quilts), the overall look is very similar to quilting. -Jenia
