Rachel Doriss visited the RISD grad student show at the New York Design Center in the First Dibs showroom. Of all the amazing work at the exhibition, there were three student designers in particular, who caught her eye: Verdrana Hrsak, Malik Eric Wagenseil, and Katey Crews.

-Providence: Ruin and Restoration by Vedrana Hrsak, Jacquard woven: cotton, rayon, wool

" I really loved Vedrana’s garments in the show. There was a mix of knit and woven within the same garment and a digitally printed dress. Her inspiration was the city of Providence. You can see in the digital print, it is a mix of band posters that are ripped and deteriorating. Her pieces were tailored and paid great attention to the construction of the fabrics and how they work on the body. I went to school with Vedrana (undergrad at RISD). She was in sculpture then. She makes beautiful work and is also a wonderful person."

-Between the Wars by Malik Eric Wagenseil, Screen-print on Dyed Silk

"I thought Malik’s work was beautiful. I especially love the digital water print on what I believe is metallic Tyvek. It reflected the light beautifully. Being from Cape Cod, I have a soft spot for water images."

-Pompous Patriotics by Katey Crews, 24- Harness Compu-Dob Loom; Various Materials

"I met Katey at the Pollack studio a few months ago. She attended a RISD field trip to NY and they visited the Pollack studio. She is a first year grad student. I loved her woven samples. In some of the samples, she knit her own yarns and then wove them. I love how exuberant they are and that she really focused on the materials. They incorporate pattern, but the pattern and the dimension of the surface are equally important. Not sure what end use (or lack of end use) she intends for these surfaces, but they are very cool nevertheless. Lastly here is one of her Patriotic prints."
